IELTS model essay topic Space exploration Sample 1:

Question: Some people believe that with advances in science and technology, the exploration of space is no longer necessary.

Answer:
While it is true that advancements in technology have increased scientific knowledge about space, it is still necessary for humans to explore space. This is due to important reasons that relate to the need for new sources of energy, the development of new technologies, and the potential to discover new worlds.

Firstly, the search for new sources of energy remains an important objective for space exploration. Scientists believe that coal, oil, and gas will not last forever. Expansion into space allows us to explore alternative forms of energy such as solar or nuclear power, or to better understand gravity, dark matter and the universe, which could lead to even greater breakthroughs.

Secondly, advances in technology are essential to make space exploration more safe and efficient. For instance, robots and satellites can be used to explore deep space while keeping astronauts out of harm’s way. The development of new rockets, drone vehicles and communication systems also allow us to better understand the vastness of space and explore it more extensively.

Lastly, mankind’s curiosity is arguably the greatest impetus for space exploration. The potential to discover new worlds, to learn more about the universe, to uncover new mysteries, and to make the impossible possible appeals to humanity’s sense of exploration and wonder. Even with all the progress made so far, there is still so much that is unknown about space.

In conclusion, space exploration is still a necessary endeavour given the potential to discover new sources of energy, advances in technology, and mankind’s enduring spirit of exploration.

Question: Many countries spend billions of dollars on space exploration, yet there are some people who suggest that this money would be better spent on other, more ‘earthly’ issues. Discuss both views and give your opinion.

Answer:

Space exploration has long been a fascinating debate, as some people argue that the billions of dollars spent on it could be better directed towards different, more ‘earthbound’ issues such as poverty, healthcare and education.

On the other hand, there are those who point out the many good things thatspace exploration has done and can do in the future. For example, the space exploration of Mars has given the opportunity to develop new technologies and knowledge that could lead to the discovery of new sources of energy. Additionally, space exploration provides countries with a chance to reflect upon and better understand their futures, and provides numerous educational opportunities, offering scientists insights into the mystery of the universe and our place within it.

In my opinion, both views should be taken into account and understood. Yes, there is much that needs to be done in terms of poverty, healthcare and education on a local level, but certain global issues, such as climate change, can be best addressed with the help of space exploration. This is because advances in space exploration allow us to gain a better understanding of our planet, such as how humanmade environmental changes are impacting the Earth’s climate and how the rising temperatures can be reversed. Additionally, space exploration could lead to the discovery of new sources of fuel for rapid technological development and transforming the planet’s primary industry.

Thus, while it is understandable that some would prefer the billions of dollars being spent on space exploration to be spent on more ‘earthly’ issues, it is my opinion that space exploration should not be neglected and that its further investigations should be taken seriously and invested in.
