Question:

What efforts can be made to reduce the amount of space debris in orbit around the Earth?

Answer:

There are a number of measures that can be taken in order to reduce the amount of space debris in Earth’s orbit. Firstly, more stringent guidelines should be established and enforced by international space agencies to prevent the creation of new space debris, especially from launches and other space activities. Additionally, dedicated technologies should be developed that are capable of tracking, controlling, and removing or otherwise disposing of existing debris in space. This could include the use of robots, satellites and other devices to send pieces of debris back to Earth, as well as techniques that can slow down the movement of debris so they do not pose a risk to working satellites and spacecraft. Finally, improved designs and technology should be used to ensure that any future spacecraft are able to minimize their production of debris. With all these efforts, the amount of space debris in the Earth’s orbit can be greatly reduced and the risk of catastrophic damage reduced.

Question: Some people say that controlling space debris is a waste of money. Do you agree or disagree?

Answer: I disagree with the notion that controlling space debris is a waste of money. On the contrary, investing in the technologies to control space debris is invaluable. This is because space debris can be hazardous for not only Spaceships but also satellites. These are necessary for scientific research. Space debris can also cause expensive damage to satellites or even render them unusable. If we invest in controlling space debris, we can protect these trappings of science and ensure that research can continue. Additionally, controlling space debris can also help reduce the likelihood of collisions between space objects and increase space safety, which is something that is important to all of us. Therefore, I believe that controlling space debris is an investment worth making.

Question:
Space debris is becoming an ever increasing issue. What measures could be taken to tackle this problem?

Answer:
Space debris is an increasingly concerning issue due to the potential hazards it poses to future space exploration and the valuable assets in space. Firstly, debris could be monitored and removed through the use of satellites equipped with radar and laser scanners that could track, measure, and classify debris in orbit. Secondly, further efforts to prevent the accumulation of debris could be made by investing in more reliable and sustainable propulsion technologies for satellites and other spacecraft. For example, developing technologies that make use of light sails, ion thrusters, and other highly efficient and fuel-saving propulsion methods. Finally, active debris removal initiatives by governments and private enterprises could also be considered to help control the accumulation of debris in space. This could be look down on an orphan spacecraft with a robotic arm and then redirected or even destroyed. Such measures could help reduce the amount of debris currently in orbit, thereby helping to mitigate any future risks.
