IELTS Writing Task 2: Essay Question
Space travel has been an important evolutionary step for humankind. What do you think are the advantages and disadvantages of space exploration?
Space exploration has been an important field of research for humankind since the dawn of the modern era. From the very first successful launches of satellites and spacecraft, the field of space exploration has continued to grow and develop, offering us a glimpse into the vast reaches of space. By studying outer space and its contents, we have been able to gain insights into our own world, our universe, and even the possible evolution of life and our species. With all this in mind, there are both advantages and disadvantages of space exploration.
The foremost advantage of space exploration is, quite simply, the knowledge it brings us. By studying space and the many celestial bodies in it, we have learned about subjects ranging from gravitation to geology and physics, and our discoveries have enabled us to progress further in many areas. We have broadened our understanding of solar systems, galaxies, and dark matter and discovered more about the origins of the universe. We have even found evidence of microbial life on other planets, offering hope that we might someday find extraterrestrial life.
On the other hand, there are a number of disadvantages to space exploration. Financially, investing in space exploration is a huge expense, often taking away resources that could be used to address problems at home, such as poverty or energy shortages. Moreover, there are significant risks involved, with the threat of possible destruction of spacecraft or the loss of human life. Finally, space exploration requires a great deal of effort and resources, leaving us limited in our ability to explore other, possibly more important, areas of scientific research.
Overall, space exploration has given us an incredible amount of knowledge, however, it brings with it several risks and disadvantages that must be taken into account. The amount of resources and energy we commit to space exploration should reflect what is necessary in order to meet our scientific, economic, and moral goals.

Question 1
Some people think space exploration should be continued while others believe that resources should be used for other purposes. Discuss both views and give your opinion.
Answer
Space exploration is often a controversial topic; some people view it as a valuable use of resources while others oppose it in favor of more immediate concerns. Those who advocate for continued space exploration often point to the achievements of past programs, such as gaining a deeper understanding of our universe and the incredible technology that has been developed, including the satellites that are now used to aid communications and weather forecasting. However, those who disagree believe resources would be better spent on improving basic services and solving earth-based problems.
In my opinion, I believe that space exploration should be continued, but with more emphasis on practical technology that can benefit us on earth. This would include research into renewable energy sources, utilizing satellites to aid agriculture, and creating space-based observation systems for early disaster warning. Although there may be considerable upfront costs, the long-term benefits could be invaluable, and we should be looking to the stars for a better future.

Question:
Some people believe that governments should allocate more funds to space exploration than to other fields of research. Do you agree or disagree?
Answer:
I believe that the importance of any field of research should be determined by the potential societal benefits it could accrue, and the funds allocated to any field should reflect that. That being said, I think governments should allocate more funds to space exploration than to other fields of research, given the vast potential associated with such an endeavour.
Space exploration has always been associated with broadening the knowledge of technological advancement and new frontiers of potential benefit. For instance, exploring outer space can include experiments on the effects of microgravity on physical and biological systems, as well as studies of other celestial bodies that can provide tremendous insights into the origins of life and the universe. Additionally, space exploration can open up opportunities for space tourism, satellite development and exploration of natural resources which can be hugely beneficial to the economy and well-being of the general population here on earth.
Thus, the potential benefits of space exploration are numerous, and the investment of more funds can enable a better understanding of the universe and create tangible economic, technological and scientific benefits that could improve the lives of anyone on Earth. Consequently, it is essential to invest more funds into space exploration than other fields of research.
