IELTS model essay topic Travel and tourism Sample 1:

Question:

What are the advantages and disadvantages of increasing tourism in different countries?

Answer:

The advantages of increasing tourism in different countries are numerous. It can stimulate the local economy by creating jobs in the hospitality and tourism industries, as well as promoting local business through increased visibility and more spending from visitors. It can also increase cultural understanding and appreciation, create better infrastructure and links to international markets, and increase the destination’s geographical and historical knowledge.

On the other hand, there are potential disadvantages as well. Increasing tourism can lead to so-called “overtourism” if the destination is not prepared with infrastructure to handle crowds, resulting in pollution, overcrowding and other negative effects on the environment, local culture and political stability. It can also lead to the displacement of local people, the rise of a tourist-oriented economy, and other detrimental outcomes.

Overall, careful planning and management is needed to ensure that increasing tourism in different countries has a positive impact and not a negative one.

Question: Some people think that the tourism industry is beneficial to local communities, while others think that it can cause environmental and social problems. Discuss both points of view and give your opinion.

Answer:
Tourism is a lucrative industry, providing great economic benefits to both host countries and local communities. It often brings a significant amount of money into regions previously cut off from international markets. However, it also has its drawbacks.

Tourism can lead to significant environmental problems. For example, many popular touristic destinations are threatened by increased pollution. Tourists often favour cars for transportation, which can contribute to air pollution in a host country. In addition, people often buy more than necessary items like souvenirs, generating a lot of unnecessary waste.

It is also necessary to consider the social effects of tourism. Tourists may bring their own ideas and culture to the host country and this could disturb local lifestyles and traditions. Foreign visitors may not respect local customs and laws, or they may view the host country as a place to take advantage of weaker laws and regulations. These could lead to a decrease in the quality of life for local people.

Though there is potential for positive and negative effects, my opinion is that the benefits of tourism outweigh the detriments when it is managed properly. Tourism not only brings money and employment to areas that need it, but it can also provide employment opportunities and education to locals. Furthermore, tourism gives locals a chance to learn about the customs and cultures of other countries. With closer monitoring, environmental costs can be much reduced. Therefore, I think that if properly managed, the tourism industry can bring many economic and social benefits for local communities.
