Topic:

Some people believe that media has a negative effect on today’s youth. Others believe that it can be beneficial in developing a young person’s cultural understanding.

Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Answer:
Media has a profound impact on today’s youth and how they perceive the world both positively and negatively. On one hand, media can be a great way to allow young people to explore different cultures and gain a comprehensive understanding of the world around them. For example, watching movies, documentaries or reading books can expose youngsters to different ways of life, beliefs and values. This can help foster a more empathic mindset as well as motivating them to discover and learn more about the world.

On the flip side, media also has its drawbacks. For instance, there is a tendency to over-sexualise and glamorise violence in a way that can have adverse affect on young and impressionable minds. In addition, there is evidence to suggest that young people can mimic behaviour and styles that are featured prominently in entertaining media content. This, in turn, can lead to an unhealthy preoccupation with physical appearances and appearances shifting one’s priorities away from more productive values, such as education and mental health.

In conclusion, media undoubtedly has both negative and positive aspects that can affect today’s youths. Therefore, I feel it is important for parents, teachers and guardians to be aware of the potential effects that media can have on children and young adults, as well as provide guidance for making more informed decisions about their media consumption.
