IELTS model essay topic The death penalty Sample 1:

Question: Some people say that the death penalty acts as a deterrent to crime. Do you agree or disagree?

Answer:

I completely disagree that the death penalty acts as a deterrent to crime. Death penalty has been practiced in many countries in the past, but the rate of violent crime still remains the same. In fact, there is a lack of empirical evidence to prove that this kind of punishment serves as a deterrent. Most of the crime that is committed is more out of necessity and poverty than anything else. Punishing people to death for their wrongdoings does not make sense and does not help in decreasing crime rates.

We should instead focus on finding solutions to reduce crime by emphasizing education and social welfare rather than punishment and retribution. Investing more in rehabilitation programs and poverty reduction would be more effective in curbing crime than increasing the use of the death penalty. It is also important to remember that execution of a criminal does not bring back a lost life. Investing in preventive strategies, instead of punishment, is the best way forward to reduce crime and make our societies safer.

Question: Some people believe that death penalty serves as a way of revenge, while others believe that it is a way to reduce crime rates. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Answer: It is without a doubt that capital punishment, namely death penalty, is one of the most controversial topics with strong advocates on both sides. On the one hand, some people argue that it is a way of revenge, claiming that the death penalty provides restitution to the victims of heinous crimes, their families and society as a whole. They further claim that the criminal should be deprived of their life for the lives they have taken away or irrevocably damaged. On the other hand, proponents of the death penalty argue that it is a way to reduce crime rates as people will become reluctant to commit a crime knowing that it can worsen their punishment.

I believe that the death penalty acts as both a form of retribution and prevention of crime but not in all cases. In the case of notorious criminals who have been convicted of severe and frequent crimes such as murder, death penalty may be the only solution. In such cases, the death penalty serves both deterrence and retribution purpose. Nevertheless, I don’t think it is applicable to all cases.

For example, in the case of minors and people with mental illnesses it may be inappropriate and excessive. We cannot expect them to understand the consequences of their actions thus they should be given another chance. Moreover, death penalty, when applied to a wrong individual, can never be taken back, making it even harsher.

In conclusion, I believe that in some cases death penalty can serve as a way of retribution and way to reduce crime rates, but it should be used in extreme cases only, when all other methods have been exhausted.

Question 1:
Some people think that governments should not use the death penalty for punishment for any crime; what is your opinion?

Answer: I believe that governments should not use the death penalty as punishment for any crime. The death penalty is a cruel and permanent form of punishment that can lead to irreversible consequences and mistakes. Nobody should have to suffer through a wrongful conviction and execution, so it is far better that offenders are punished with a more humane form of sentencing. Additionally, the death penalty does not serve as an effective deterrent to crime, as the majority of data indicates that it is no more effective at reducing crime rates than other forms of punishment. Therefore, taking the life of a person is not necessary in order to send a message to potential criminals.
