Task:

Some people think that social classes have become more equal in recent years. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Answer:

I agree to some extent that social classes have become more equal in recent years. Recently, many initiatives have been taken to make the lower class of people more educated and empowered to stand at the same level as the upper classes. For instance, the Governments around the world are providing free education to people belonging to the lower social class and encouraging them to take up higher studies and secure well-paying jobs, while several non-profit organizations are helping them with healthcare, employment and nutrition. Moreover, some countries are implementing new laws that are aimed at providing certain privileges or tax deductions to people who belong to the lower social class, such as in Singapore.

Therefore, there is a certain level of equality being achieved between the upper and lower class of people, that would not have been possible without the above mentioned initiatives and laws. Nevertheless, there are still some issues that remain unresolved. For instance, the upper classes have a bigger say in politics due to their wealth and connections, which makes it difficult for the lower class to engage equally in matters that affect their communities.

In conclusion, in recent years, social classes have made progress towards equality but further reforms, initiatives and laws need to be put into place for complete equality to be achieved.

Question:

Some people believe that the differences between social classes are decreasing in modern society. To what extent do you think this is a positive development?

Answer:

In recent years, the gap between social classes has been narrowing in many parts of the world. On the one hand, this promises certain positive outcomes. For example, reduced class distinction could mean more opportunities for the underprivileged to rise up the economic ladder. This could help break the cycle of poverty and create more economic stability in a society. On the other hand, eliminating the differences between social classes could be seen as a negative development. For example, an absence of class distinction in society could mean limited incentives for high achievers and lead to a sense of complacency.

Ultimately, the extent to which this is a positive development most likely depends on the specific context. If the differences between social classes were reduced in a way that promoted social mobility and empowered people of lower economic classes, then it could be seen as a positive development. Conversely, if the socio-economic disparities were reduced to such an extent that it blunted people’s ambition, then it could be viewed as a negative development.

Question:

In many countries, there are marked social classes within society. Some people believe this is beneficial as it encourages people to strive for success. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Answer:

I agree that having marked social classes within a society can have certain benefits. Social classes can provide social motivation for people to strive for success and earn a higher status. This can encourage people to work hard to improve their job prospects and achieve a higher social standing. It can lead to greater competition, which can have a positive impact on various aspects of society, such as the economy.

However, social classes can also be a problem. There can be a feeling of inferiority among those who find themselves in lower classes, which might result in feelings of depression and a lack of self esteem. Additionally, people in lower classes often feel as though they are unable to move up in society, creating an atmosphere of hopelessness and lack of ambition.

All in all, while there are benefits to having social classes within a society, there are also some drawbacks. The key is to ensure that social classes are not too rigid and that people have the freedom to strive for success and reach a higher status, regardless of the class they come from.
