IELTS model essay topic Healthcare Sample 1:
Task
In many countries, health care for elderly people is becoming increasingly expensive. Some people suggest that the government should bear the costs of the care, while others believe that this responsibility should fall to the families of the elderly.
Discuss both views and give your own opinion.
Answer
Healthcare is a considerable expense for most countries, especially when it comes to covering the costs of elderly care. While some people argue it should be the government’s responsibility, others advocate that this task should fall to the families of the elderly.
When it comes to caring for the elderly, many feel the government should take responsibility. By doing so, costs can be spread across the taxpayer base, instead of an individual or family bearing the burden alone. It also ensures that the elderly have adequate care schemes available to them – regardless of their financial circumstances. For example, in the UK, the National Health Service provides free healthcare for all citizens, including the elderly. Moreover, providing healthcare for the elderly can potentially save the government money in the long run.
On the other hand, some think it is unfair to expect the government to pay for elderly care since it is the family’s responsibility. Not only would financial strains be diminished for the elderly family members, but it would also build solidarity. Furthermore, with access to the family, the elderly would receive support from people who understand their individual needs and who, potentially, have a greater emotional capacity for caring for them.
In my opinion, I think both the government and families should share the responsibility of elderly care. Governments could take on services like providing medical care and medicines, while also helping to subsidise families caring for the elderly. Families, likewise, should strive to support their elderly relatives as far as they are able to do so. If a combination of both where employed, it could reduce the overall financial burden while also ensuring elderly people get the best care available.

Question
Some people believe that healthcare should be the responsibility of the government, while others believe that people should take individual responsibility for their own health. Discuss both views and give your opinion.
Answer
People’s opinion on healthcare responsibility is deeply divided. On one hand, there is a group that believes healthcare should be the responsibility of the government. They argue that public healthcare systems are essential to provide universal access and quality healthcare services to all. Healthcare is a right that should be equal for everyone, and the government is better placed to ensure this access. Furthermore, the government is capable of significantly developing resources such as health care infrastructure and medical facilities, through increased funding and allocation of other resources.
On the other hand, some people believe that taking responsibility for own health is of great importance. They claim that healthcare is not only about treating immediate conditions, but also about maintaining a healthy lifestyle to prevent potential illnesses. Such strategies require individuals to be proactive, building healthy habits and making informed health decisions. For example, people can participate in regular physical activity, eat balanced diets and avoid smoking. Moreover, medical experts believe that individuals have to take responsibility for early detection of any illnesses, thus raising the chances of successful treatment outcome.
In my opinion, a combination of both these points of view is preferable. As healthcare landscape is evolving, nations should provide universal access to quality healthcare services, while also educating citizens to take responsibility for their own health. It is essential to create robust public healthcare systems and encourage individual participation in health decision-making and preventive strategies. Health expenditure should also be increased to ensure quality healthcare services are available to all citizens.
